Trash & Recycling
Trash pick-up takes place in Cumberland Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays that fall on a week day, on those days, pickup follows the holiday schedule. If a holiday falls on your trash pick-up day, your trash will be picked up the very next day. All pickups for the rest of the week will also be one day later. (Friday’s pickup will be on Saturday).
Services Of Interest:
Bulky household items are picked up by MTG Disposal (MEGA) every Tuesday on a weekly basis by appointment only. These items are considered larger household trash items that cannot be placed in your trash cart. Typical items include couches and small furniture items - residents are limited to two items per week.
Large items such as mattresses, box springs, construction debris, televisions/electronics, or white goods/appliances are not considered bulky items and require a different method of disposal.
To register for a bulky item pickup, residents can fill out the online bulky item registration form or call the department at 401-728-2400 x155. Scheduling must occur by the Thursday at 1:00 PM prior to the scheduled Tuesday pick-up date.
The bi-weekly curbside yard waste collection within the Town of Cumberland will end on September 26, 2025. Fall season weekly yard waste collection will resume beginning on October 6, 2025. Residents are reminded that October 13th is a recognized trash holiday and all trash, recycling, and yard waste collections will be on a one-day delay collected Tuesday, October 14, 2025, through Saturday, October 18, 2025. The fall weekly yard waste collection will end on December 5, 2025.
Yard waste is defined as grass clippings, leaves, vegetation and small branches. No trash, stones, mulch, or sand can be mixed in with residents’ yard waste. Bags found with these unaccepatble materials or other debris and refuse will not be collected.
Yard waste is generally removed on the same day as your trash and recycling but by a separate MEGA collection truck. Yard waste is only accepted if placed in brown paper biodegradable lawn bags or small bundles of branches, no larger than 2 inches in diameter, and limited to 3 feet in length should be bundled and tied. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected, however, it may be collected from open containers, which will be returned to the property.

Clothing donations allow them to continue to offer their invaluable mentoring programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters has kept 4 million(!) pounds of cloth out of the landfill each year and has donated more than $100,000 to its nonprofit partners over the past year through its profit-sharing program. They donate 30 percent of net profits back to the bin partners, which helps to improve and support communities like ours!
Curbside Pickup:
You can arrange curbside pickup by going to their website or calling 401-942-2434 Option 2.
Drop-Off Donations
Can be dropped off to one of the two drop off bins located in town (Diamond Hill Park or the Old Police Station).
MTG Disposal, the company that services our town for trash & recycling collection, also offers a weekly white good collection at no charge to our residents. White goods are large metal appliances, including stoves, dorm sized refrigerators, water heaters, treadmills, gas grills, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers).
Call MTG Disposal at (866-420-6342) to schedule a pick up. Place item at your curb by 6 am the morning of the scheduled pickup. Please, not before 6 pm the prior evening. We want to keep our Cumberland streets clean.
TVs & E-Waste items are no longer accepted at our Highway Garage. TVs, computer monitors, computer towers, laptops and tablets are considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of safely.
Residents can drop off any electronics at Green Tech Assets on 1110 Central Avenue, Pawtucket, RI, they are open Monday through Friday from 8:00-4:00 and their phone number is 401-721-9965.
RIRRC allows RI residents to bring TVs and E-Waste to the landfill for FREE disposal. RI Resource Recovery is located at 65 Shun Pike, Johnston RI. Hours: Monday- Friday 6 am – 3:30 pm, Sat 6 am – Noon.
Mattresses and box springs are not accepted in the weekly town trash collection.
Diana from BP Express at 401-400-1658 will pick up mattresses starting at $25 per piece. You can schedule pickups directly with her.
Was your Trash, Recycling, or Yard Waste Skipped?
Please report the skipped pickup online directly to the trash company.
Reminders: Acceptable & Unacceptable Recyclable Items
Acceptable Items
- Paper, flattened cardboard, cartons
- Metal cans, lids, and foil
- Glass bottles and jars
- Plastic containers
All containers must be emptied at a minimum, but we ask that you rinse them out when able to do so.
Unacceptable Items
- No plastic bags
- No textiles or wools
- No paper shreds, napkins, or paper towels
- No foam containers
- No metal that isn't a can, lid, or foil
- No plastic that isn't a container
